Why would it still send Sirius to the dementors?
Because Snape told the ministry that Sirius is a guilty murderer and he cursed the children with Imperio to say he’s innocent.

See if you agree with me: just re-read PoA and came to think that Snape was in the Shreaking Shack while Remus and Sirius were telling Harry the true about Petigrew and about Sirius' innocence. But he just ignored it and told the minister a lie, all because he couldn't forgive. That could have sent Sirius - an innocent man - back to Azkaban, and Remus alongside with him. If that's being a good person, what's bad? I think Snape is a great, well built character, but he is not better than James
and actually it would send Sirius-an innocent man- right to dementor’s “lips”.
so yeah, he’s great character, but when it comes to personality James beats him.
That’s why I hate when people say about what a jerk James was, but absolutely ignore the fact Snape was too. James changed at least.
