So I’m just re-reading ‘The Prince’s Tale’ cuz I wanted to see some canon Lily/James scenes, and basically Lily says it all right here. 

For all those people that say James’s pranks were ‘cruel’ and ‘evil’ listen to what Lily has to say! 

To Snape:

“I know James Potter’s an arrogant toerag,” she said cutting across Snape. “I don’t need you to tell me that. But Mulciber’s and Avery’s idea of humor is just evil. Evil, Sev. I don’t understand how you can be friends with them.” 

This little passage says a lot about Lily’s opinion on James and the Marauders. She acknowledges that sure, James is arrogant and immature, but the things he and the marauders do is in no way comparable to the horrible things Snape’s friends (and probably Snape himself) get up to, which involves dark magic.

He turned back to her, “You are unbelievably sexy.”
